Sabra Guacamole vs. Wholly Guacamole

Battle of the supermarket guacamole brands. Who makes the best avocado-based dip? I compared two of the most widely available guacamole brands to answer that question.

 

Sabra Guacamole

Sabra might be best known for their hummus and salsa, but they do also make guac. Sabra is 50% owned by Frito-Lay/PepsiCo, so they have a pretty good reason to make a tasty guacamole. Gotta dip those Tostitos in something!

Visually, before you dig in, Sabra’s guacamole looks great. It’s got a slightly chunky texture and you can see hints of tomatoes and herbs. It’s slightly yellower than Wholly Guacamole and the color is pretty uniform.

Upon first dip, it’s noticeable that the texture is lighter and more… airy(?) than you’d expect. No chance of your chip breaking here.

Taste is, of course, a personal preference, but there’s something missing from the Sabra guacamole. It lacks the buttery richness that a really great guacamole should have, and the texture makes the dip feel more heavily processed. I don’t dislike it — in fact, I still eat it all the time — but I’d choose Wholly Guacamole if I had the option between the two.

Fresh Hass Avocado, Tomato, Onion, Jalapeno Pepper, Cilantro, Salt, Lime Juice Concentrate, Garlic, Ascorbic Acid (to Maintain Freshness).

Wholly Guacamole

Whether you’re in Whole Foods or a more down-to-earth, lower priced food shop, Wholly Guacamole is pretty ubiquitous. You can usually find a couple different varieties, including Original, Homestyle, Spicy, etc. I’m tasting Original for the purposes of this comparison.

Wholly Guacamole has a slightly more uniform look than Sabra, though you can clearly see some big chunks of avocado that vary the color a bit. But there are no tomatoes visible and no obvious spices.

When you dive in with a chip, it’s definitely a thicker guac than Sabra, and more akin to what I personally prefer and how my Best Guacamole Ever usually turns out.

Flavor-wise, Wholly is definitely my pick. It’s got a rich, real avocado flavor and, even though it has garlic in it which I don’t include in my own guac, the combination of flavors is just right.

Hass Avocados, Jalapeno Puree (White Vinegar, Jalapeno Peppers), Dehydrated Onion, Salt, Granulated Garlic.
